Now that we’re half full, let’s start discussing flexible game options: I’ve had one request for random leader selection (or a draft – each player is provided by a random set of civs to choose from), and another request for quick speed rather than online, to give more opportunity to expand across the map before someone’s victory nears. Both appeal to me, what do you think?

Also: does everyone have all the DLC? can disable any that anyone is lacking.

I loaded some spawn. Above all if we play on quick speed, we should avoid someone got indonesia or japan (you can’t settle more than one city before having shipbuilding) or scotland and england (2 cities before shipbuilding).

I think the issue is bigger than just the island civs – I just did a random spawn as the byzantines, and the starting positions were so tight the ottomans weren’t even able to settle. There’s a couple things we could do:

  1. limit the number of city states or eliminate them entirely to give more room for civs
  2. limit the available civ set to civs from a particular era (i.e., only ancient civs – egypt, sumeria, ethiopia etc. or only later civs or only geographically separate civs)

what does everyone think?

I would limit the number of city states, ban some civs or leaders who spawn in the same area or wouldn’t play true start (but i think the true start thing was what appeal most of us)

I’ve reviewed the wiki pages on this map, which aren’t entirely consistent, but here’s my proposal:
No city states
not-entirely-random lottery: each player is randomly assigned to a geographic list, from which they may choose one leader-civ combo. If we start with fewer than 12 players, unchosen geographic positions would be eliminated.

Southern Europe: Trajan(Rome), Julius Caesar(Rome), Alexander(Macedon), Philip II(Spain), Joao III(Portugal), Pericles(Greece), or Gorgo(Greece)
Northern Europe: Peter(Russia), Kristina(Sweden), Harald Hadrada-Konge(Norway) or Harald Hadrada-Varangian(Norway)
Northern Africa: Cleopatra-Egyptian(Egypt), Cleopatra-Ptolemaic(Egypt), Ramses II(Egypt), Menelik II(Ethiopia), or Amanitore(Nubia)
Mid/South Africa: Shaka(Zulu), Mvemba a Nzinga(Kongo), Nzinga Mbanbe(Kongo), Mansu Musa(Mali) or Sundiata Keita(Mali)
Fertile Crescent: Cyrus(Persia), Nader Shah(Persia), Hammurabi(Babylon), Gilgamesh(Sumeria), Saladin-Vizier(Arabia), Dido(Phoenicia), or Saladin-Sultan(Arabia)
East Asia: Seondeok(Korea), Sejong(Korea), Qin Shi Huang-Mandate of Heaven(China), Qin Shi Huang-Unifier(China), Kublai Khan(China), Yongle(China), Wu Zetian(China), Genghis Khan(Mongolia) or Kublai Khan(Mongolia)
Indian Subcontinent: Gandhi(India), Tomyris(Scythia) or Chandragupta(India)
Southeast Asia: Ba Trieu(Vietnam) or Jayavarman VII(Khmer)
Pacific Islands: Gitarja(Indonesia), John Curtin(Australia) or Kupe(Maori)
South America: Pachacuti(Inca), Pedro II(Brazil), Simon Bolivar(Gran Colombia) or Lautaro(Mapuche)
North America: Poundmaker(Cree), Wilfrid Laurier(Canada), Teddy Roosevelt(America), Teddy Roosevelt-Bull Moose(America), Teddy Roosevelt-Rough Rider(America) or Abraham Lincoln(America)
Central America: Lady Six Sky(Maya) or Montezuma(Aztec)

what does everyone think?

Thank you for this amazing work.
I fear that egypt and arabia share the same spawn, phoenicia and arabia spawn 3 tiles away from each other though.

just confirmed, you’re right re: phoenicia – it should be on the Fertile Crescent list, not the Northern Africa list.

With respect to Arabia and Egypt: you’re right, but under the lottery system I propose, in a game in which one player has selected Arabia and another Egypt, each can move in the opposite direction for a good settling site and room to grow. I’d rather provide more civ choice to players rather than less. In that scenario, the problem of no room to grow wouldn’t be a problem for either player.

Of course, if there’s a consensus we can remove Arabia from the game entirely (as I propose removing England, Japan, Scotland, Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, Portugal – though thinking on it now I don’t see why Spain or Portugal wouldn’t be OK to add to the Southern Europe list).

Yeah spain or portugal should be ok too. Maybe macedon and france too?

I definitely agree re: Macedon, will add to the Southern Europe list – France I don’t think is a good idea, because if France is OK so would Netherlands and Germany be. But then which list should they go on? European geography on the map seems to me to be much more restricted than around the Middle East, so it’s not as true that nearby starts will give equitable starting areas (for example, if there’s a Russia and a France). So I’d keep France out of the game, unless others feel strongly

Well germany and netherlands are too much in the middle of europe, they would be too close to a northen civ or a southern civ, whichever list we add them. In my opinion France is ok in the southern list but if you add macedon, portugal and/or spain, southern list is already full of options when some other lists got barely 2 choices. So i’m fine without france.
Would you add scythia to indian subcontinent? It spawns faily close to it? (and I promise @Manoir I’ll do my best to get him a chance to play scythia if he joins this game lol)

added Spain & Portugal to Southern Europe list

have you confirmed scythia’s spawn location? if it’s close to the subcontinent I agree, would be good to add it to that list. the publicly available maps can be a bit contradictory

I loaded scythia and some other spawns. Scythia is somewhat in the middle of nowhere, the closest civs would be india. Persia is not far too but having scythia in the india list would give some alternatives.

just confirmed it too, I think it’s reasonable for them to be on the Indian Subcontinent list
