Onan's game! (04a2043f)

I just googled Polish cuisine and saw they had something called Faworki and it was a nice little bad wordplay with Faworki Ethic. I don’t think I had Faworki when I visited Poland about 10 years ago.

Work Ethic can be really good if you got high adjacency holy sites. It can be massive, especially in the early game. I sometimes go for Choral Music instead to get some culture out of the holy sites.

Thanks, we Swedes are usually pretty good at English for non native speakers. We start to learn English at an early age and sub media more than we dub so we usually get a good head start.

Whoa! That’s quite a story about your namesake.

Haha, yeah. I usually wake up to my turn but at the time our friends from the Americas wake up, you have already gone to sleep. Then we have 4-5 hours at night (your morning) where everyone’s up before I have to go to bed. I always hope to take two turns during this time but the turn often comes back too late for me.

Yep, Kansas City, basically born and bred. I grew up here, moved away for college and during my twenties, then came back once I had a family. A very midwestern story.

My Swedish, Portuguese, and Maori are all terrible, so I’m lucky my native language is the Lingua Franca! I guess I have… Hollywood to thank? Our famous arms-length, plausibly deniable, but nevertheless very much government supported, capitalism? I dunno… do you think if reality were a game of civ, that America would have won a culture victory yet? :stuck_out_tongue:

Incidentally, I’ve only ever played multiplayer Civ with strangers on the internet. Never had a critical mass of friends who were interested. Plus I was a massive cheapskate / contrarian in my younger days, and didn’t have an official copy of Civ until last year. I played the open-source clone called Freeciv that would run on Linux throughout my twenties. I think it’s still out there on the internet somewhere, although I can’t imagine who in their right mind would be playing it these days.

Speaking of action on the Polish-Cree border… I think you’ve come plenty far north there, Ms Jadwiga. Last I checked, there were no “Rocky Mountains” in Poland!

I still underestimate the importance of culture, now that it’s tied to civics and has its own tree. A bias from earlier versions, I think, which you guys may school me to correct!

Yes, we had a good stretch there with two turns a day fairly reliably.

We have been in lockdown the here longer than this game has been going. Yesterday, our high schools opened up for seniors (older students), but with lots of health controls.

I am also hopped up on steroids pre-surgery and a complete insomniac as well due to these meds. I’m looking forward to some normalcy returning on all fronts!

The hero’s journey, leaving home and returning again–from Odysseus to Joseph Campbell to Star Wars.

I grew up in Hawaii, so I’m a dual US / NZ national, I guess expat from the US perspective.

Culture victory? Well, civ is of course an abstraction, a gamified slice of history attempting to encompass all of humanity’s technological and cultural development! But the world’s turn limit is from our perspective, infinitely high, and its processors are very very fast!!! Any “victory” will end like Ozymandias, reduced to dust by time.

I am the same, I have never played civ MP with anyone I know in person. Freeciv, I did check it out at one point, even play with it a bit, but it was too much of a head shift to switch, and it had that second rate feel, but also that, wow, how far are they going to take this feel. I guess I had enough cash. I backed away!

Plausible deniability and capitalism in the real world are a whole nother can of worms! The world is pretty fraught at the moment!

The landscape labelling provides…probably too many clues when scouting…and yes, would those be American Rocky Mountains, or Cree Rocky Mountains? I’m guessing the latter.

Funny thing: I still have fog in the spot between our three empries! A stone’s throw from my cap alongside my main trade routes to Poland.

Well, mid-day in Rio. May be a few hours yet before America’s Viking nemesis shows up, and Francisco and I continue our interesting game of settler chess, having dispensed with the words. Still some room down here in the South East. Poland seems to be with a Manifest Destiny in this world, settled out west already–Polish California! Do Cree have some hinterlands left to themselves? Vikings profess to be clinging to the coast, which does make sense. But I will of course want to verify myself.

Well the Rockies are a hell of a lot closer to me than to you, so I’m claiming them for the Cree!

The one thing I’m confused about right now is how, if I don’t have the New Frontiers Pass / latest DLC–how the heck am I playing Teddy Roosevelt?

And yes, it seems to be we’re at a point where the Cree, Vikings and Americans turn to each other and say, “Uh, guys, we need to talk about Poland.” We just made friends though–and we also like being friends, and Cree seems on the back foot. And Vikings far. Shrug. Civ plays out as it will.

In other news, I started my second PYDT game using a few mods for balance and mp improvements, atheists-highlands-2, as Inca. I wonder what that will be like.

I’m going to bed in about 10-15 minutes. If you’re able to find the time to play your turn before then, great! Totally understand if you’re too busy. Just an heads up, @Onanista.

Edit: Still up. For a little while longer.
Edit 2: I think it’s bedtime now. Might still play if I notice the turn passing soon.

Teddy is from the base game. If you own the New Frontiers pass you get two different versions of him. One of them is kinda like the Teddy from the base game but not really.

When’s your operation by the way? Is it still a day away? I don’t remember what day you wrote about it and I’m also confused by all the time difference.

Do you know if it’s confusing for Hawaiian companies to work with New Zeelanders and vice versa. Book a meeting for tuesday and someone shows up on the wrong day. It’s about 23 hours time difference, right? It’s practically the same time but different day. Must cause a lot of mixups.

This is something I notice affecting me as well, interfering with sleep if I know a turn is near or might be ready when I wake in the night. I think eventually, when lockdown is over, I will be more likely to play my turns in my evening, and rarely in the morning, except for weekends. And holidays. Could just be the sleepless drugs I’m on. The surgery is tomorrow–I needed to get out for a surf today, could be a while!

Yeah I guess Americans aren’t so used to dealing with the dateline. Kiwis have to be. I will probably just play the one turn tomorrow morning. Shrug, we shall see what occurs. It doesn’t really matter where it stops…it’s just gonna stop for a while. Oh right, that will be on me!

Good luck today! I’m hoping you have a swift recovery!

Also. I’m sorry. I forgot about the friendly rules. I had a great person that snuck just a couple of tiles past my borders unescorted. He didn’t scout or anything, it was just to gain a tile for my kingdom. I will make sure to escort them in the future if I need them to travel outside of my kingdom.

In hindsight, I personally don’t think I broke the spirit of what the rule is there for. I also understand it’s not really up to me to decide and I will escort in the future.

Given the tile you grabbed was a very nice spot for a holy site for Baltimore…

It’s no big deal. I probably would’ve missed it anyway. And I think you could’ve come to it from the other side as well. Well played, I guess! Chess teaches me humility.
