Land of the Lost (0f128371)

Well, it depends on the odds. If it’s a 1 in 12 chance whenever it erupts (probably a lot more than that if it’s a big eruption?), then I probably won’t get hit that often. In any case, I plan to find a safe spot and build a very nice 2nd city ASAP, maybe shift the capital if it’s an ongoing problem. If that can be done voluntarily… Maybe leave it behind and let the barbs have it…?

Such fun! (And I actually mean that sincerely.)

PS heads up, my turn (in the other game and this one too) will be delayed, possibly for a day or more… Stuff. I’d apologise, but I know you guys will tell me I don’t need to. :cowboy_hat_face:

PPS/EDIT: nobody mentioned my new avatar. :sob:

You can’t shift your capital unless you lose it to another player. Barbs or city states can’t conquer your original capital.
Just hope for the volcano to stay still or just erupt now in the early game to make better yields and then never again.

We will pray to the volcano gods to spare our lives, offering ritual sacrifice…

Oh! Did you turn on Apocalypse mode?

I don’t know what that is, but I did crank the disasters from the default 2 up to 4, the max. That was part of the premise of the game.

Now I have to look up A.M. and see if ritual sacrifice is actually a game mechanic!

Edit: nope, no AM. I’m not sure I have that DLC. Sounds intense!

Apocalypse Mode adds the Soothsayer unit, which lets you call down natural disasters on your enemies. I believe there is some sort of sacrifice mechanic, maybe as one of the World Congress projects? Or maybe it’s one way you can counter a Soothsayer? I don’t recall, but it was fun when I played through it on single player.

Yeah, the modes can be fun but I don’t really like that some game modes can open up some almost game breaking combos or exploits.

Indeed, and my random comment lined up perfectly with it!

The Soothsayer can sacrifice military units to volcanoes. Personally I think they should have created a voluntary sacrifice unit, a bit like a settler, Virginia or otherwise. Next we’ll be building elaborate walls, moats and cranes to offer sacrifice to giant apes… or at least a GDR.

Edit: I’m just gonna leave Virgin-ia up there, funny but stupid autocorrect!

Apocalypse mode is fun, but to really enjoy it requires a faith economy, not something the Kongo can do!

For the record, one game-breaking exploit is to build the Great Bath and use soothsayers to perpetually flood the river. Each flood adds one Faith to flooded tiles, enabling the exploiter to produce just bonkers amounts of Faith per turn.

Yep. That’s the one I was thinking of when we talked about apocalypse mode.

Okay I think that was my first PYDTurn where I loaded the game, did nothing, and saved and closed it. Such fun!

I’m thinking about maybe starting another, 8 player, standard map, continents maybe with islands…no real theme just a standard, bigger game. I figure I’d only get turns every couple days, so not a huge addition to my civving here. Oh and classical start, to skip the slow start. Thoughts?

I like the idea of starting in the Classical era. Moving a unit one tile and then waiting a day is somewhat tedious.

I set up a new game, check it out:

Eight Fat and Slow Greedy Bastards

Join up if you’re interested, and if you want to discuss other settings, post over on its smack talk thread.

The above post is for everyone in this thread, if interested. And maybe @dotapoker, too? And whoever else happens along.

By the time we start I may have bought all my missing DLC, too.

Sheesh now I’m getting more game ideas, like a teamer 3v3 on Lakes or Inland sea or even the balanced snowflake map. Team games are a great way to learn from each other.

I’m not sure I can join another game at the moment.

I think exploration is such an important and fun part of Civ that the snowflake map is quite a turn off for me.
Team game sounds fun and tempting but I’m not sure if I have time at the moment.

Agreed. I don’t mind a snowflake on a realtime MP/tournament game, but I think a snowflake’s predictability would spoil a PBEM.
Now, a Seven Seas map, on the other hand…

I hear you guys, there’s only so many games/turns in different games you can play before it becomes a bit of a chore. That’s actually why I’ve set up–I finally settled on a name–Eight Classy Bastards, because I know with that many players I’ll only get a turn every couple days, so it won’t overload me.

Right now I’m in three: one 4 player, this six player, and a PBC game, which I think has 6 as well, and that one’s fairly slow turn every 2-3 days.

So with 8CB I was toying with the idea of making it domination victory only…if you want to discuss settings for that game, even if you don’t end up joining, let’s not cross the threads (who knows what might happen?!), please post over there on that thread. Link to come. :sunglasses:

Oh and right there with you on snowflake and other no-surprise maps…I think they’re only warranted for a team game where you might want as much balance as possible, but otherwise, yeah–about as exciting as a dead fish.

So…did I mention the first volcano I started two tiles from went Megacolossal last turn? And that the volcano I spotted when I moved away from that one, had a Megacolossal eruption this turn? Fingers crossed the third one doesn’t take out the Mapuche next turn! Although that would be pretty funny.
