Thanks so much for finding that key insight! you’re right, once I switched to standard starting positions the map built no problem.
And the game is started, finally, after I’ve practically memorized our leader order 
as much good fortune as possible to all!

In the last turn I got the machinery tech, I really don’t know why…
did you get the tech (i.e., you are able to train crossbowmen now) or did you just get the eureka because you trained 3 archers?
I don’t have 3 archers but I got the tech (for no reason) and now I can train crossbowmen.

is machinery in the normal position of your tech tree?
I received Craftmanship in a similar way 
huh. weird – I checked the turn file and there are no mods called outside of the leader packs and dlcs … anyone ever seen this happen in another game, have any idea what issues could be causing it?
had you just improved a third tile, and were working on craftsmanship at the time?
Nope. Hadn’t even trained a builder at that point…first thing I thought of…

What’s the deal with Great Prophets?! Says they’ve all been taken but guessing that’s not the case. Is there ‘no religion’ in this game?
there should be …
OK, I’ve reviewed the game settings and mod lists in detail and can find nothing out of the ordinary there. however, as @Pete correctly reported, there are no more great prophets available to be earned, and only one religion has been founded. In the religion screen, the religion count is shown as 1 out of 0 (???). Clearly it must not have been like that for the entire game, as one civ has managed to found a religion. Never seen anything like it – combined with the other weird reports above there’s clearly something going wrong in this game.
Guess this game is becoming more random than any I’ve ever been in before (!!!)
I founded a religion by building Stonehenge.
Not sure if things were broken from the start or if it bugged out after I built Stonehenge.
