Industrial Era Start (All DLC) (4632dea4)

Smack talk goes here for Industrial Era Start (All DLC)! Game URL: https://playyourdamnturn.com/game/4632dea4-785c-4bff-9549-7e21f46fca44

Seven Sea as first choice or Continents preferred.

Will this include BBS/BBG, or is that not a consideration for a game starting in Industrial? TBH, I haven’t even made it to the industrial age yet in a BBG game so I’m not even sure what changes there are.

Probably just regular all DLC no BBG mod.
(I don’t feel like BBS is making a huge difference so probably not that either.)

FYI (although I’ve never played such a start),
Industrial start is very different, I will list a few things so the game is fairer and you don’t get surprised and can play wisely accordingly:

  1. You start with 500 gold. (Suggestion: use that to buy a settler)
  2. First City is 7 population. You get a free settler, a free trader. Plus some units. Units can embark from turn 1.
  3. You get a free builder in your first two cities. (Suggestion: Put in the builder +2 policy before you settle) And of course builders can chop from turn 1.
  4. You get 500 faith. So you can pick pantheon on turn 1 (so I will pick the free settler, sorry. But with 7 population it’s not hard to build settlers.)
  5. You get some free envoys.
  6. Campus, Commercial Hub, and Theatre Square starts with their lv.1 buildings, meaning that once you build the district the most basic building will be there. I think this will influent Commercial Hub most.
  7. You get some free Governor Titles.
  8. Some old wonders are gone, like the Pyramids, so there’s no way to build those.
  9. So are some old Great Persons.

I like the timezone-diversity so far. Hopefully this game moves at a reasonable speed.

lets ban the free settler

I will think about this, but what do we do if someone violates this and we only found out like 50 turns later when we met him? It’s a little tricky to enforce. Do you know any mod that simply ban that pantheon? If so I’d be happy to use.

a settler on the first turn is way over powered. let’s just agree to ban it. rule breakers will be dealt with

Hmmm if any player here is relatively new I’m happy to let him/her take that free settler pantheon. And I won’t take it in this game. I’m OK if you want to take it. Or if @OutsideTheBox wants to (iirc he said he’s relatively new to the game).

Even in ancient era start game Religious Settlement is not that strong, sometimes it’s not as good as God of the Open Sky or Goddess of Festival, and on certain map not as good as Goddess of the hunt.

The good thing about Religious Settlement is it’s kinda universal and available when you don’t have a good pantheon to pick. Or when you got lucky and pick it before turn 20.

I seem to be holding my own in my PBC games so far, enough so that I don’t deserve any special favors, though I appreciate the thought.

I’m fine with banning it and I think that if we can’t trust the people here just to not do it, then what are we even doing here, it’s not like we win money if we win. Plus, if we are all going to have a pantheon right at the beginning, wouldn’t we notice immediately if someone had taken religious settlements because it wouldn’t be available to us?

I just don’t feel comfortable enough to ban it in the game. Or we can do it the following way:

We ask people to bid. If you take Religious Settlement, then you have to announce it here (after taking your first turn), and you will have to give the first civ you met x gold, the 2nd civ you met 2x gold, 3rd 3x… till 7x for the 7th civ. (The later met get more because gold is more precious early game.)

So bid for x. The highest offer will get Religious Settlement. If someone is willing to, for example set x = 40, then the total gold he/she will pay to the rest of players will be 1120. I will be totally fine with that. If you think someone setting x = 10 and getting RS gives him a huge advantage, step up and offer a higher x, like x = 15. (For the ones not good at math, the total gold you will pay is 28x.)

I disagree with any special rule.

I think if we feel the need to put in special rules to balance it out we should just ban it. Keeping track of who needs to pay gold to who etc is a bit to complex to be worthwhile in my opinion, I’m happy with a flat ban

Including banning Religious Settlement? If yes I will just leave it on the table.

If some of you think Religious Settlement is too strong then I will not take it, leaving it to the next person.

I agree that the bidding thing seems too complicated. Looking at your (very helpful!) list of differences, it looks like we still start with one settler: would it make sense to use the mod (I think it’s called “Mitch’s QuickStart”) that allows us to start everyone with an extra settler? Maybe if we all start with two settlers, and people might use their gold to buy a 3rd one, it would make a possible 4th one from religious settlements kind of not that much of a big deal…? I’m not even sure I’d take RS at that point as I’d be too busy trying to figure out where to put the other 2-3.

I agree that starting with more settlers makes religious settlements less effective.

I actually forgot the most important thing:

You start with two settlers! Proof (together with your initial units)

Now what do we say about Religious Settlement?

Also, cities starts with walls. (I assume medieval walls.)

If we start with two and can buy a 3rd fairly quickly/immediately, I’m less concerned about RS. Let’s see what Valamas has to say since he seemed to be the most adamant.

Oh wait: did Valamas bail?
