Steve's Game! (fba492ee)

Oh yeah, pay attention to boosting your techs and civics, as that speeds up everything. So one is killing a barbarian with a slinger, so try to get a slinger set up to take the last blow in a battle.

Thanks, that definitely helps. I do variations of those ideas, somewhat, but I think the ART is in getting the right balance and timing of it all. Definite punishments for us warmongers coming into Civ 6 that are annoying, at best, and civ killers at their worst. But I guess the name of the game is “civilization”, so it makes sense they tried to force the game in that direction.

Warmongering is more present in the base game, as the AI is more aggressive in that way I find. I suspect that in multiplayer though, at least here, the wargaming would be a bit more prevalent between civs, but not sure. But yeah, you can’t just be a warmonger here, and there are things that temper that such as war weariness and diplomatic penalties, so you have to be selective and timely in initiating a war. The key there is initiating, as that is mostly where the penalties come in. Early in the game though, there are no penalties as far as I know, it is just as we move down the civics tree. So you do need to pay attention to culture, science and religion, all of which have military elements as well. And the major key to this game is efficiency. You will find that your cities may not produce or grow at 100% due to food shortages, housing limits and not enough amenities. If you get used to how those work and what makes them bountiful especially, the game is less frustrating. So yeah, take a look on-line and look at those mechanics to better understand them. And if you are a warmonger kind of player, you are definitey lucky you didn’t get my leader!!! I can barely initiate a war for any reason! especially against city-states, and have to go through some hoops to do so against other civs. So in some ways I feel I am doomed on a tiny map, but I like a challenge! So war on!!!

Certainly enjoying the pace of play in this game, thanks guys!

Sorry to hear about your non-warmongering civ, Blarney O’ Blade. But okay, if you’re okay with the challenge let’s move forward. I need every advantage I can get!

I’ve never been much of a warmonger personally and Cleo doesn’t really lend herself to it, although an early chariot archer rush can be fun…

Well, looks like we will have to defend ourselves from Steve then… Japan is probably a good domination civ, but I have never played them. Well, however this game develops, just happy I am playing in one! Which leads me to this question Matt: Do you join games through CivPlayersLeague? If so, can you give me some pointers on how to navigate that? I am connected to the group, but don’t understand how or where the open games are listed, and which ones would be played on PYDT. Thanks for any guidance.

We have another human!!! Welcome to the game Alexander.

Hello everyone! Have a good game!

Welcome Alexander! Thanks for joining. Hopefully Greece’s A/I didn’t set you back with its early decisions.

Matt: I had some help from a player named Ro that guided me how to see the new games accepting players. None available at the moment, but I will work my way into one soon! Looks like the CPL rules are pretty strict, and I will have to watch out for blacklisted gameplay for sure!

The AI played well: trained a scout and a builder, started building a monument, learned mining, so I’m already mining mercury.

Great! Barbarians already pestering my peaceful people. I tried to negotiate… but they’re just mindless violence generators, so they have to go. Oh, and they have some gold, too.

Blarney, what is “blacklisted play”? You mean cheaters? Oh, all cheaters must die! But I guess they need a trial first, huh.

Don’t know if you have played Barbarians Clan mode, but you actually CAN negotiate with barbarians and recruit their units!!! Of course, YOU just want to kill them, haha.

No, no. I tried… really!

I think I got in one or two CPL games, but it’s not really my thing. I just like the variety of PYDT games I can find.

Steve: yeah, blacklisted, there are a few things that one does fairly regularly in single player play that are termed illegal exploits by CPL, so one kind of needs to be aware of those. Some I didn’t know you could do at all, like stack units! if I know what they call stacking units.

Matt: thanks for the headsup on CPL, I will try them, and see if it is casual enough for me. I am competitive, and I enjoy it most when there are tough challenges to overcome, but having to be worried about breaking rules and sanctions and stuff could be a drag.

Thanks for that. My opinion is that “game exploits” (bugs that users can use for gain) are okay if everyone is aware of how to use them when the game starts (and everyone agrees to use them). It’s hard to get the software people to fix all of these that users find so just agreeing is better. If users use them even though those things have been “blacklisted” or if other players aren’t aware of those exploits, then that’s just plain cheating, and should be first warned, then booted out if it continues. I wouldn’t worry about it here. If we find something that we do that looks like a “bug” it’s better just to let the group know about the bug and continue on rather than worry about what is and isn’t allowed to do.

I have a problem with loading the next turn. Any ideas on what to do? I did disable the mods I have installed.
