No promotions? eg Archers cannot upgrade to crossbowmen?
I would like to say - YES, NO Promotions! Except I just found out too.
Don’t know, haven’t researched crossbowmen yet. But I have noticed you can build slingers and archers, which tells me slingers probably don’t upgrade to archers. So archers probably don’t upgrade either.
Although I might otherwise quite quickly forget this game, one thing will stand out.
I had started, and have just finished, sinking a healthy barb battleship with a damaged quadrireme and a frigate.
Barb battleships? I haven’t seen one of those yet.
Also, your comment implies you may not like this game very much. I’m finding this game very interesting. I wish I had understood the mechanics of it early on because I would have done things differently. In fact, I wouldn’t mind playing this game again with the same settings.
I would have said not understanding rather than liking. (Then again there are quite a few games where thinking i understood them didn’t lead to anything I would have felt compelled to remember.) Then again perhaps it is more difficult to like something not understood. (Although I admire my wife for this facility…)
btw Is a feature of this game that borders are reluctant to expand ? When I look at most cities the targeted next available hex shows as -1 turns.
I’m not sure about the border expansion thing. But I do know my borders are expanding. Perhaps once they expand so far they won’t expand any more?
I will apologize for some of these settings as I did not give them their due attention. Some of the unintended consequences are an interesting challenge. Why do the barbs and CS get the latest equipment. What does one do with the Quadrieme or sword now? Cannon fodder? The lack of health improvement with experience is a bit odd. I do not know of any border growth changes.
I do like the game. It would have been nice to better understand some of the settings (just because I did them does not imply I remember them). And, as always, even understanding them is unlikely to improve bad play.
I was not complaining, whatever it sounded like, and certainly not trying to prompt an apology.
Sorry if it sounded that way. My gameplay is flaky these days, whatever the settings.
Ozy, I didn’t take it that way. I assumed from your post that this was a game that was not your favorite - similar to a game where you start in tundra and watch everybody else get big while you stay small.
I was just apologizing for not doing my due diligence properly. I like the variety. I did expect to slow down tech a lot more than it did.
Spotted a Cardiff aircraft carrier. Sending in quadrireme for the kill.
LOL I saw an antitank threatening my line infantry. I think I have a musket to help out.
Or how about leave Cardiff alone? They are a nice friendly city-state that has done nothing to hurt you and only wants to be left alone. Oh, and I’m their Suzerian so there’s that…
There used to be a saying here to the effect that the Welsh were simply Irish who couldn’t swim.
Whereas the part Celt in me takes umbrage at this gratuitous nonsense, the AngloSaxon portion is leaning towards … meh…
That kind of fits
Nothing says I failed at keeping the tech growth low as a loose GDR.
I saved my gold, built Big Ben, then I purchased 3 GDR on the same turn. GDR vs. cavalry does not turn out well for the horsies.
GG all. Fun game and thanks for sticking thru to the end. I wouldn’t mind if Dan set up another game like this. Another medieval start but maybe have the ability to upgrade units? I really liked the governor options because that threw a new twist in the game, made me specialize my cities at the beginning.
